Zakat-al-Mal is a religious duty for individuals whose wealth has reached and remained above a set nisab threshold for one lunar year. It can be paid at any time throughout the year. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs sets the nisab in the Maldives, which was last updated in April 2025. The current nisab is MVR 9264.15.

This threshold is determined by the value of gold and silver, which fluctuates according to global market prices. Individuals whose wealth meets or exceeds the nisab for over a lunar year are required to pay 2.5 per cent of their wealth as Zakat.
