The Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, has announced that the government will begin signing agreements with recipients of 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme starting next week.

The announcement was made during the sixth edition of the ‘Ahaa Forum’, a public platform allowing citizens to directly engage with cabinet ministers. Dr Muththalib stated that the final list of recipients for the flats being developed by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has now been compiled, and preparations for signing the agreements are currently underway.

While the administrative work is ongoing, the minister noted that FDC’s flat agreements have not yet been finalised. The Ministry is currently working with the Attorney General’s Office to complete the legal processes required before signing can begin.

A dedicated location has been selected for the agreement signing, and arrangements such as tents and seating are now being prepared. FDC is also completing the administrative procedures necessary ahead of the process.

The flats will be offered under a rent-to-own scheme, with agreements valid for a period of 25 years. Upon full payment of rent over this term, recipients will gain ownership of the units.

Following a review of the recipient list by the current administration, the Ministry of Housing confirmed that only 1,820 individuals from the previous government’s list met the required eligibility criteria. The list was reassessed after numerous public complaints, but the decision has been made to proceed with allocations based on the original list, excluding those found to be ineligible.
