The Parliament today approved Idris Fauzee as a public member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
In the voting held during today’s sitting, 64 members voted in favour of Idris Fauzee, while one voted against and two abstained.
Idris Fauzee will replace Dr. Aminath Ummu Kulsoom, whose five-year term on the JSC is set to expire next month. Dr. Ummu Kulsoom was first appointed to the position on August 6, 2020. Under the Judicial Service Commission Act, members representing the public cannot serve consecutive terms.
Initially, eight candidates submitted their names for the position. However, after two withdrew their candidacies, the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee interviewed the remaining six candidates. According to the committee’s report, four of them achieved the minimum qualifying score of 75 marks to be nominated for a floor vote. Idris Fauzee received the highest score among them, with 81 marks.
