President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced yesterday that all eligible students who applied for the Higher Education Loan Scheme this year—both in the Maldives and abroad—will receive financial support.
According to the President’s Office, 806 students have met the programme’s eligibility criteria. With this directive, the relevant ministries have been instructed to extend loans to all qualifying applicants, ensuring access to funding for higher education regardless of the original quota.
In March, the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development opened 500 loan slots for overseas studies, covering programmes from diploma to PhD level. Yesterday, the ministry released the provisional list of awardees for the student loan scheme, which supports both local and international study.
The number of eligible applicants has exceeded the initial quota, prompting the President’s decision to expand loan coverage to accommodate all qualified students.
