A number of local media outlets have raised concerns over restricted access during the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Maldives on Friday, citing a lack of clarity and transparency in the accreditation process.

Several journalists attempting to cover key events were informed they required special access passes, which were not issued to all media organisations, nor communicated in advance. While the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has denied issuing any exclusive media permits, it has since emerged that a select group of outlets were granted privileged access, leaving others excluded without explanation.

Media organisations reported that their requests for coverage went unanswered, while some outlets received clearance without public notice, prompting criticism over perceived bias and lack of equal access.

The state visit, which included multiple high-level events such as the ceremonial welcome at Republic Square, the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), and the inauguration of development projects, involved tight security and extensive logistical arrangements.

Large sections of Malé were closed off during the visit, leading to significant traffic congestion, disrupted business activity, and widespread inconvenience for residents. The restricted movement in the capital, paired with the limited media access, has sparked public discussion on the balance between security protocols and public transparency during official visits.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit marked his first trip to the Maldives since beginning his third term in office, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of Maldives–India diplomatic relations and the country’s 60th Independence Day.
