Construction of the terminal began in 2016, and the project was completed at a total cost of USD 457 million. The new terminal is designed to reflect the Maldives’ rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, incorporating elements inspired by the country’s seascape, islands, and Islamic traditions, including references to traditional hirigaa (limestone) carvings.

President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed were welcomed to the ceremony by MACL Chairperson Ayesha Nurain Janah and CEO Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, before launching the drone display and touring the terminal. The event was attended by the Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, cabinet ministers, foreign dignitaries, and representatives of development partners including the Saudi Fund for Development, OPEC Fund, Kuwait Fund, and Abu Dhabi Fund.

In his keynote address, President Muizzu called for a national commitment to prioritising the public interest, describing the new terminal as a symbol of what can be achieved through collaborative development. He emphasised the role of the airport in attaining economic self-sufficiency, stating that the terminal will strengthen tourism and economic growth.

President Muizzu said that the decision to inaugurate the new terminal on Independence Day was deliberate. He explained that economic sufficiency is a cornerstone of sovereignty, and that this airport stands as a pillar of the Maldives’ financial independence.

President Muizzu expressed gratitude to former Presidents Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for their respective contributions to the project. He also thanked the international partners and local stakeholders involved in completing the terminal, noting the decade-long effort and cooperation required to bring the project to fruition.

The new terminal spans nearly 12 metres in height and can accommodate up to 7 million passengers annually. It features 47 check-in counters, six self-service kiosks, 20 departure immigration counters, six boarding gates, and 12 aerobridges. The upgraded security process aligns with global airport standards, improving passenger flow and experience.

The new facility replaces the original terminal opened in 1981, symbolising a new era for Maldivian aviation as the country continues to expand its role as a global tourism hub.
