President Dr Mohamed Muizzu led the nation in commemorating the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence this morning, urging a renewed commitment to national unity, identity, and personal development.
The official ceremony took place at the Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE).
In his address, President Muizzu stressed that while visible development is underway across the country, true progress must go beyond physical transformation. He said that national development begins within each individual, and will remain superficial unless Maldivians embrace their identity, honour the sacrifices of national heroes, and give precedence to Dhivehi language, Islamic faith, and core national values.
He described meaningful progress as being rooted in character-building and personal responsibility, adding that development must reflect the shared values that define the Maldivian people.

He explained that development must go hand-in-hand with a commitment to values and a shared sense of nationhood.
He described independence as a hard-won legacy, shaped by the courage and sincerity of past generations, and underscored the collective responsibility to preserve that legacy. The President called for national unity and sincere patriotism, stating that only through shared values can the Maldives sustain its independence.
