President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially inaugurated the MCGH Opticals at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and the Hulhumalé Dialysis Centre at the Orange Hiya building yesterday.
MCGH Opticals Opens at IGMH
The launch of MCGH Opticals, established under the Malé City Group of Hospitals, aims to provide comprehensive opticianry services as part of the Government’s broader healthcare strategy.
During the inauguration ceremony at IGMH, President Muizzu toured the new facility and personally handed over prescription glasses to the first three recipients. The facility, completed within just two months, offers services including eye prescription assessments, diagnosis of eye conditions, and dispensing of prescription glasses.
The initiative follows President Muizzu’s 31 May announcement to improve public access to quality eyewear. Under this initiative, the Aasandha scheme allowance for prescription glasses was increased to MVR 2,000.
Speaking at the event, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, CEO of Malé City Group of Hospitals, confirmed plans to expand optical services to Hulhumalé and five regional hospitals across the country in the near future.
Dialysis Centre Launched in Hulhumalé
Later in the day, President Muizzu also inaugurated the new Hulhumalé Dialysis Centre, a specialised facility equipped with 30 dialysis beds, aimed at providing essential treatment for individuals living with chronic kidney disease.

The ceremony featured a video presentation of the centre, followed by a guided tour. Operated by the Malé City Group of Hospitals, the centre is expected to significantly ease the burden on patients who previously had to travel abroad for treatment.
The President’s administration has made it a key priority to reduce dependency on overseas healthcare, and the new dialysis centre aligns with this commitment. Currently, healthcare projects worth over MVR 400 million are underway across the Maldives to expand local access to critical services.
These inaugurations underscore the Government’s ongoing push to strengthen the national healthcare system through targeted infrastructure development and service delivery.
