The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has proposed the appointment of former Civil Court judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa and former Deputy Minister Mohamed Shaheed as judges of the High Court of Maldives.
In a press release, the JSC noted that Abdulla Jameel Moosa holds a Bachelor of Shariah and Law with Honours. His judicial career spans over 15 years, beginning as magistrate of L. Dhanbidhoo Magistrate Court from September 2003 to January 2009, followed by his tenure as a Civil Court judge from February 2009 until his resignation in February 2019. Since leaving the bench, Jameel has practised law privately.
Mohamed Shaheed, meanwhile, also holds a Bachelor of Shariah and Law with Honours from the Islamic University of Maldives. Prior to seeking a seat on the High Court, he served as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and has experience working in private law firms.
The two vacancies on the High Court bench arose after two sitting judges left to join the Supreme Court earlier this year.
According to the JSC, 17 candidates submitted applications for the vacant posts.
While the High Court confirmed the nominations, it did not announce when the new appointments would formally take effect, stating only that the Commission had completed its selection process.
