The Government of Maldives today inaugurated the country’s first-ever Artificial Intelligence (AI) Readiness Report in a ceremony held at the Islamic Centre.

The report was developed over a period of 10 months by a multi-stakeholder steering committee, with technical guidance from UNESCO and support from NCIT. It is based on UNESCO’s global framework, the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, which was adopted by 193 countries in 2021.

According to the ministry, the assessment focuses on creating a foundation for the responsible use of AI in the Maldives. It highlights the need for accountability, transparency, and protection of individual data, particularly sensitive personal information. It also provides policy recommendations aimed at ensuring that AI technologies are implemented ethically and equitably.

Speaking at the event, Dr Kinaanath said the report had already informed discussions with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on accelerating AI development under a robust national policy. He added that the report would help shape future initiatives to fast-track innovation in the technology sector.

Several key figures attended the event, including Tim Curtis, Hao Zheng, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in the Maldives, Insog Kim, and senior officials from government ministries and the local tech industry.
