Stream Foundation, in partnership with Ooredoo Maldives, has reported major progress in its ongoing coral reef monitoring project near Fulhadhoo, Baa Atoll, launched with the Maldives Coral Institute.
Since its launch in early 2023, the initiative has enabled near real-time monitoring of reef ecosystems using high-tech underwater cameras powered by Ooredoo’s network.
The monitoring system captures detailed information critical to our understanding of reef resilience and the impacts of climate change, such as data on coral health, fish populations, and biodiversity. According to Ooredoo Maldives, in 2024 alone, the cameras recorded 15,728 individual fish, averaging 43 sightings per day. The highest daily count was logged on 20 April 2024, with 402 fish spotted.
Alongside tracking fish activity, the system has also documented coral bleaching and signs of recovery, providing a valuable snapshot of environmental challenges and resilience. The company noted that these insights support timely and targeted conservation actions.
Ooredoo Maldives’ reliable high-speed connectivity, even in remote ocean areas, has played a key role in the success of the project. Real-time data transmission allows researchers and local authorities immediate access to marine information, enabling informed decision-making and quicker responses.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to environmental sustainability and showcases how technology can help protect marine biodiversity, vital to both communities and the tourism sector,” Ooredoo Maldives CEO, Khalid Al-Hamadi, said, highlighting the significance of this project.
Now entering its third year, the partnership aims to expand this monitoring model to additional reefs and ecosystems across the country. With a focus on innovation and environmental impact, Ooredoo, Stream Foundation, and the Maldives Coral Institute are working to scale up reef conservation using smart connectivity solutions.
