Shauna Criticises Move To Rename EPA And Shift It Under Tourism Ministry

The former Environment Minister, Aiminath Shauna, has raised concerns over the government’s decision to rename the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) and place it under the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
The govt’s attempts to weaken @EPAMaldives oversight by unilaterally amending EIA regulations and policy to make structural changes without a credible consultative process is worrying. Another sign of the Muizzu administration’s complete disregard for the rule of law.

Shauna criticised the move, highlighting that it was introduced alongside unilateral amendments to Environmental Impact Assessment regulations without broad consultation. She described the change as a significant step that could undermine environmental governance.
The EPA was established during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration, which aimed to ensure its independence. While the previous government under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih pledged to strengthen this independence, it was unable to fully achieve it.
The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has denied claims that the EPA is being abolished, stating that the change involves only a name and administrative structure adjustment. However, the decision has drawn criticism from environmental advocates, who warn it will weaken oversight and increase ministerial influence.
Nasheed has also expressed concern, stating that the agency’s independence is crucial for the credibility of government environmental policies.
