President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced yesterday that Maamaduvvaree will be handed over to Hithaadhoo, Baa Atoll.

He made the announcement while addressing Hithaadhoo residents during his ongoing four-day tour of Baa Atoll’s inhabited islands, which concludes today. The President said Maamaduvvaree holds historical significance for Hithaadhoo, whose people have long had substantial economic interests in the island. He noted that, although leased for tourism, the island’s development had not progressed as agreed. The Government will resolve the lease in line with legal requirements before transferring the island to Hithaadhoo.

During the visit, the Government signed agreements to build a multipurpose hall for the island’s school and carry out land reclamation. The President said these projects would bring significant benefits, adding that the school hall would be accompanied by other necessary facilities.

He confirmed that work will begin this year on four key pledges, including a new Health Centre with expanded facilities, laboratory services, and dialysis provision. Sports infrastructure will also be developed, with plans for a full-size football pitch, volleyball court, Fitness and Recreation Centre, and an outdoor gym.

In Kihaadhoo, one of the three other islands he visited yesterday, the President announced a school extension project with a science laboratory, completed shore protection works, and new erosion control measures in the 2026 budget. He also pledged to relocate the powerhouse, build new Fenaka offices, supply an ambulance this year, and extend the Health Centre next year. Sports facilities, including a football ground, outdoor gym, and children’s park, will be developed this year.

In Dhonfanu, the President prioritised water and sewage projects, directing MWSC to address staffing shortages and start work immediately. Agreements signed yesterday cover the construction of six classrooms, a multipurpose hall, library, science laboratory, and relocation of the channel guiding post. Land reclamation will add 13 hectares for harbour expansion and a swimming area. Sports projects include a football field, futsal and handball courts, with volleyball and recreation facilities budgeted for next year.

President Muizzu inaugurated the Bank of Maldives ATM service in Hithadhoo, Kihadhoo, and Dhonfanu yesterday.

In Dharavandhoo, the President called for cooperation between councils and institutions regardless of political differences, stressing that political interests should not hinder community welfare. He defended amendments to the Decentralisation Act as empowering communities and emphasised the need for accountable local governance.

Development pledges for Dharavandhoo include eight new classrooms, office premises, and a multipurpose hall at Baa Atoll School, health sector upgrades, road and harbour improvements, and tourism initiatives. He also announced plans to upgrade Dharavandhoo Airport through Island Aviation Services.
