The government has confirmed that it will not impose asphalt roads on islands, emphasising that residents will have a say in shaping local development projects.

Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib said the government remains committed to aligning developmental initiatives with the preferences of island communities. He highlighted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during his ongoing four-day tour of inhabited islands in Baa Atoll, has assured residents that projects will be adapted to reflect their wishes and sentiments.

Dr Muththalib noted that while some islands had requested vehicles and equipment to address flooding, the absence of formal communication from their councils had created the impression that communities wanted asphalt roads. In contrast, three island councils have officially expressed their preference to retain natural sand roads and instead requested equipment for maintenance and flood management.

The Minister explained that the government is prepared to provide technical support and necessary equipment to address flooding in a cost-effective manner that preserves the natural environment of the islands. He added that any road development would be carried out in a way that is economically and socially beneficial to the local communities.

Dr Muththalib reiterated that asphalt roads would not be forced upon islands, underlining the government’s commitment to respecting the decisions and preferences of residents.
