Police Confirms Investigation into Death of Man in Custody

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) have started an investigation into the death of a man in police custody who was declared dead when brought to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) early this morning.

MPS identified the deceased as 44-year-old Ahmed Afrah of Galolhu Zaamia, Male’. He had been arrested on Friday, 15 August, and was being held at Atholhuvehi in cell number 7. Officers took him to the hospital after he was found unresponsive around 5:50 am today, where he was declared dead.

MPS stated that its Major Crimes Investigation Department has launched an inquiry into the case. The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC) have also been informed.

In addition, the Professional Standards Command of the police is conducting an internal investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police have not disclosed the reason for Afrah’s arrest.
