The vessels were officially handed over by the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, at a ceremony held yesterday. The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner of Police Faruhad Fikuree, senior police officers, and officials from the Japanese government.
The Maldives Police Service stated that the new vessels will enhance the capabilities of the maritime police, including enforcing laws at sea, protecting island communities, and responding to emergencies more effectively.
The donation forms part of a grant agreement signed in May 2022 under the Exchange of Notes, valued at USD 5.1 million. The project aims to improve the operational capacity of the Maldives Police Service, with a particular focus on strengthening maritime security and safety across the country’s outer islands.
Japanese officials noted that the assistance is intended to support marine safety and law enforcement as part of broader cooperation between Japan and the Maldives to reinforce security and stability.
The Government of Japan expressed hope that the vessels will contribute to more effective day-to-day policing and improve responses to maritime incidents within the Maldives’ extensive territorial waters.
