Bad Weather to Continue Across the Maldives This Week

The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met) has forecasted heavy rain and rough seas across different parts of the country, with conditions expected to persist until Thursday.

The Met said that the weather is linked to the southwest monsoon, known locally as Hulhangu, and that conditions would ease gradually at different times across the regions.

Bad weather is expected to continue in the northern and central atolls until Tuesday, while the southern atolls are likely to experience similar conditions from Tuesday through Thursday. Rainfall is forecast to affect islands in the north and central Maldives until Wednesday, with seas expected to calm from 2 September.

The 24-hour forecast indicates heavy rain and thunderstorms in the northern atolls, with showers and thunderstorms in some parts of the south. Winds are expected to blow from the west and northwest at 13–23 miles per hour in the northern and central regions, and from the southwest and west at 5–15 miles per hour in the south, with gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour.

The seas are expected to remain rough in the northern and central atolls, while conditions in the south are forecast to be moderately calm.
