Two Bangladeshi Workers Detained in Malé over Kidnapping and Assault Case

Two Bangladeshi workers have been detained in Malé on suspicion of kidnapping and assaulting a fellow expatriate in order to rob him of money.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the incident occurred on August 14 at a guesthouse in the Machangolhi district of Malé City. The two suspects, identified as 37-year-olds Sadiqul Mia and Mohamed Azeezul, both Bangladeshi nationals, were arrested at the scene of the crime at around 2:20am.

The men are accused of unlawfully holding another Bangladeshi worker inside the guesthouse, assaulting him and stealing what police described as a large sum of money. Court documents show that both suspects are undocumented.

Police confirmed that the victim sustained injuries during the incident. Investigators submitted photographs of the crime scene and of the injuries suffered by the victim as evidence in court.

The suspects were presented before the Criminal Court on Saturday, where their remand was extended by 15 days. The case remains under police investigation.
