Maldives and China Sign 11 Agreements to Boost Cooperation

The Maldives and China have signed eleven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements aimed at strengthening collaboration across a range of sectors, including capacity building, economic development, infrastructure, and renewable energy.
The group signing ceremony was held at the Wangfujing Hilton Hotel in Beijing, where delegations from both countries formalised the new agreements. Officials highlighted that the MoUs reflect a shared commitment to advancing sustainable development and deepening the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xinhua described the signing as a new beginning for bilateral cooperation, noting that the agreements would open fresh avenues for progress in key sectors. In a social media post, he wrote that China and the Maldives were “joining hands in cooperation and working together toward a brighter future.”

Maldives’ Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, also welcomed the milestone, characterising it as an important step towards building impactful partnerships and driving sustainable progress.
The agreements were signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to China, where he is attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.
