The Ministry of Transport confirmed that RTL services will soon be introduced in Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu, and Laamu atolls as part of the nationwide expansion of the network. Baseline surveys are scheduled to be carried out this month and next, with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to facilitate the groundwork.
Currently, RTL ferry services operate in 10 atolls, enhancing connectivity and easing travel for thousands of residents. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been entrusted with implementing the project, which is divided into three phases across six zones and carries a total investment of MVR 800 million.
Launched in 2022, the RTL ferry network forms a central component of the government’s efforts to transform public transport and improve accessibility across the Maldives.
