MPL Reports Decline In Cargo Clearance During Last Week Of August

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has reported a decline in the volume of goods processed between 24 and 30 August, compared with the previous week.

According to the company’s weekly statistics, 553 20-foot containers and 403 40-foot containers were cleared during the period. This was lower than the 743 20-foot containers and 594 40-foot containers cleared between 17 and 23 August.

The clearance of several essential commodities also recorded a decrease. A total of 11,617 sacks of onions were cleared in the final week of August, compared with 16,777 sacks in the preceding week. Other imported items such as eggs, carrots, garlic, tomatoes, pineapples, cabbages, bananas, pumpkins and sweet melons also saw reduced volumes. MPL recorded the clearance of 14,540 boxes of eggs, 5,415 sacks of carrots, 5,647 sacks of garlic, 3,672 sacks of tomatoes, 1,819 sacks of pineapples, 2,157 sacks of cabbages, 2,087 bananas, 806 sacks of pumpkins and 539 sacks of sweet melons.

The Maldives relies heavily on imports, with major trading partners including the United Arab Emirates, India, Singapore, China and Malaysia. Essential goods such as eggs, onions and potatoes are typically sourced from neighbouring countries like India and Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, data from the Maldives Monetary Authority shows that the national inflation rate has remained steady at four percent.
