The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has stepped up work on the government’s flagship ‘Five Million Tree Planting Programme’ with the distribution of Haivakaru (Teak) saplings to seven atolls as part of a wider drive to strengthen the country’s environmental resilience and respond to the growing threat of climate change.

The initiative, launched on 5 June last year by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, is a key element of the administration’s plan to restore natural landscapes and expand green cover across the Maldives.

For the latest phase, the ministry has tasked the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) with delivering saplings to islands in the Vaavu, Faafu, Noonu, Laamu, Thaa, Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu Atolls. The teak tree, once common in the region but now considered at risk of vanishing, has been identified as an important species for reintroduction and ecological restoration.

The project forms part of a broader national commitment to environmental protection. In addition to increasing vegetation, it is intended to reduce the impact of shifting weather patterns and climate-related disruptions on the low-lying island nation.
