The Ministry of Transport has instructed the City Council to cancel all currently leased street-side parking spaces in the city.
The directive, issued by the government, aims to make all street parking for four-wheel vehicles publicly accessible, ensuring no spaces are reserved. The Council has been advised not to renew existing parking leases beyond this month and to halt the leasing of new spaces.
Currently, the City Council has leased over 1,000 parking slots to private vehicle owners and taxi operators.
The move addresses long-standing concerns over limited parking in the city, a recurring issue raised by residents. During his presidential campaign, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu pledged to resolve the city’s growing parking challenges, including ending the practice of issuing fines for vehicles parked in areas without clearly designated spots.
The City Council has stated that public notification regarding the changes will be issued soon, with all street parking for four-wheel vehicles set to become freely accessible from the last week of this month.
