The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, met on Monday with social media content creators and media professionals to gather their views on the government’s upcoming loan scheme for content creators.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced earlier this week that the technical work required to launch the soft loan scheme was close to completion. He stated that the loans would be made available within the next two weeks. The initiative is intended to expand the role of the creative economy and create opportunities for young people to take a more active role in the sector.

Minister Saeed explained that the meeting was part of efforts to ensure the programme is developed in line with the perspectives of those working in audio-visual production, media sales and marketing. He noted that the purpose of the loan scheme was to provide business opportunities in industries related to social media content.

The use of platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook has grown significantly in the Maldives, with increasing participation from people of all ages. The government has positioned the loan scheme as a way of supporting this growing creative sector.

At the same time, concerns have been raised over the government’s media bill, which was under review in the ruling PNC-majority parliament. Critics have argued that the bill could restrict freedom of expression on social media.

The legislation was passed by the parliament yesterday while journalists staged protests, though the government has said that amendments were made after considering the concerns raised. The PNC has maintained that it does not intend to regulate social media.
