The government has announced plans to reopen Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort in Addu City by 31 December 2025, nearly six years after it closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Authorities have engaged in discussions with Addu Investments Private Limited and other relevant stakeholders to address the resort’s prolonged closure.

These discussions have resulted in a firm commitment from Addu Investments Private Limited to resume operations and reopen the resort by the end of the year.

The reopening of Shangri-La Villingili is part of a presidential pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Since its opening in 2009, the resort has contributed to local livelihoods and improved connectivity through Gan International Airport, the Tourism Ministry press release read. Before its closure, the resort employed more than 500 staff.
