Former deputy speaker of parliament and MP, Moosa Manik (Reeko Moosa) has criticised what he described as the influence of prominent families in Malé, saying the capital belongs equally to all residents regardless of their social standing.

Speaking at a public gathering held by the Malé City Council, with Mayor Adam Azim in attendance, Moosa said some influential families discourage criticism against them, claiming that individuals from less privileged backgrounds often feel unable to speak out.

“There are some prominent families in Malé who would get angry if anyone spoke out against them. Because we belong to the vulnerable and poor families of Malé, we are unable to say anything,” Moosa said.

He said some residents from influential families continue to view themselves as the most powerful figures in the capital, but argued that Malé should not be shaped by the interests of a select group.

Referring to households in areas including Maizaan ge in Henveiru and Maafannu ge, Moosa said families with long-standing influence should recognise that the city belongs to all its residents, including the most underprivileged and the most vulnerable people as well. He urged Mayor Adam Azim to reject practices that allow certain groups to hold undue influence over the city.
