The Malé City Council is scheduled to disclose details of land leases within the capital today, following the completion of a full audit and registration of leased land.
The initiative, led by Mayor Adam Azim, fulfils a commitment made in July to conduct a detailed review of all land leased by the council. The mayor had previously noted that such an exercise had not been carried out in the council’s 15-year history.
According to Mayor Azim, the completed register provides a full overview of all leased land, including information on leaseholders, the purpose and duration of each lease, rental terms, and any associated corporate social responsibility (CSR) components. The findings are set to be made public during the council’s general meeting on Wednesday, with councillors already informed of the upcoming release.
The move follows growing calls for transparency from within the council. Galolhu North Councillor Mohamed Saif Fathih had earlier urged the mayor to disclose details of council-owned land, voicing dissatisfaction over delays in releasing the information and raising concerns about land being leased at high rates for extended periods.
Mayor Azim has repeatedly emphasised his commitment to openness in council affairs, stating that no contracts would be granted without being presented to both the council and the public.
