Two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in gang-related violence while in possession of a box cutter allegedly intended for use in an attack.

Police detained a 19-year-old and a 34-year-old following an intelligence tip indicating their suspected participation in gang activity. Both men are accused of possessing a sharp or dangerous weapon as part of a group.

According to the remand order, officers discovered a box cutter hidden beneath the seat of the motorbike used by the suspects. One of the individuals reportedly admitted that the weapon was intended to be used in an attack against another person at the location.

A court ordered both suspects to be remanded in custody for seven days on Wednesday as investigations continue.

The arrests follow recent comments by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who stated earlier in the week that only a small number of groups in the Maldives still fit the definition of gangs. He noted that former gang members have ceased criminal activities and are now leading normal lives.
