The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has underscored the critical role of taxpayer education and stakeholder cooperation in steering the country through its evolving fiscal regime, addressing delegates at an industry workshop held by audit firm KPMG.
Speaking as a panellist at the KPMG IFRS Workshop 2026, Sausan Saeed, Deputy Director of Taxpayer Education at MIRA, contributed to a discussion titled “Navigating the New Maldives Tax Landscape: Regulatory, Regional and International Perspectives.”
During the session, Sausan detailed the recent structural adjustments within the national tax framework, focusing primarily on amendments to Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Income Tax. She outlined the operational expectations facing businesses under the updated requirements and addressed the wider regulatory implications for commercial entities operating in the Maldives.
Sausan highlighted that successful enforcement of new statutory obligations relies on targeted taxpayer engagement. She advocated for continuous, constructive dialogue between tax administrators, commercial entities, and external tax advisers to resolve transition challenges and encourage voluntary compliance across the private sector.
The panel forms part of ongoing industry efforts to align domestic tax policy with international accounting standards, as authorities work to broaden the domestic revenue base while minimising regulatory friction for local businesses.
