The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts and the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide state financial assistance to private media outlets.

Under the Media Grant Policy, a fixed 0.1 per cent of the state budget has been allocated for media support, to be disbursed in three instalments. This marks the first time that the state budget has included a dedicated allocation for financial assistance to private media.

The agreement establishes a framework to ensure that the funds are distributed through a fair, transparent and equitable system. The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission has been assigned responsibility for managing and administering all state financial assistance to private media, while the Ministry of Finance and Planning will release the allocated funds. The commission will also disclose details of media outlets that receive support.

The assistance is intended to support the financial sustainability and independence of private media, promote quality and productive journalism, and strengthen journalism as a reliable and responsible employment sector.
