Man Turns Himself In After Evading Police For More Than A Year

After evading court proceedings for more than a year, a 26-year-old man has surrendered to police custody following a police notice to find him. 

Izam Zahir from Gaafu Dhaal Atoll Vaadhoo had been the subject of repeated police search announcements after failing to appear before the Criminal Court for hearings in an ongoing case. Police confirmed that he has now been detained in police custody  and that arrangements are under way to appear before the court on 30 December.

The announcement for this search was reissued multiple times after he continued to miss scheduled court hearings. According to some reports, in total police made nine separate announcements seeking his whereabouts.

Responding to questions from journalists in the police media group, police said the Criminal Court had repeatedly ordered them to place Izam in remand custody to ensure his appearance in court. Despite extensive efforts, officers were unable to locate him until he turned himself in following media coverage of the case.Police have not disclosed details of the charges against Izam.
