Both men were presented before the court and remanded in custody for five days. The Drug Enforcement Department is leading the investigation into the case.

The arrests followed a major seizure by Maldives Customs, which intercepted chocolate syrup bottles containing suspicious substances. The bottles, valued at MVR 30 million, were tested during the operation, with initial results indicating the presence of hashish oil.

Customs reported that the total weight of the imported hashish oil was 40 kilograms, with each bottle containing between 1.10 and 1.14 millilitres of the substance.

Hashish oil, a derivative of cannabis, is classified under Schedule 1 of the Prohibited Drugs list. Maldivian law imposes the death penalty for importing more than 350 grams of cannabis‑based substances.
