A new housing policy has been published allowing Male’ residents who own one-room flats awarded under government housing schemes to apply for flats under other schemes, subject to the surrender of their existing flats.

Under the updated regulation, owners of one-room flats who have a child or multiple children under the age of 18 are eligible to apply for housing through other government schemes, provided their current flats are handed back in accordance with government policies.

The regulation also permits owners of two-room flats awarded under government housing schemes to apply for flats under other schemes if they have two children of different genders, subject to the surrender of their existing flats.

The policy change follows concerns raised during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent meetings with Male’ residents, where difficulties associated with living in one-room flats and the need for access to alternative housing options were highlighted.

In response to these concerns, President Muizzu confirmed that owners of one-room flats are eligible to apply for housing under the ‘Emmenah Boahiyaa Vehikan’ scheme, which was launched on November 16.
