Social and Family Development Minister Dr Aishath Shiham has revealed that a total of 110 children under state care have been placed with families since the current government took office.

The update was provided during a press conference at the President’s Office, where the minister presented the ministry’s progress.

Dr Shiham stated that the number of families volunteering to foster children in state care has steadily increased. She noted that the ministry closely monitors these households and highlighted the exceptional kindness and respect families have shown toward the children.

Of the 110 children placed so far, some have been reunited with their birth families, while others have been placed with new foster families under the “Family for Every Child” initiative, which began in November 2023. The programme has been described as progressing well.

The minister also emphasised efforts to equip children in state care with practical skills for daily life and future employment. This year, 23 children have participated in internship programmes, while around 40 have received life‑skills training.

As of 30 September, 156 children were in state custody under the Child Rights Protection Act, comprising 85 boys and 71 girls.

Children enter state care for a variety of reasons each year. The minister reaffirmed the President’s vision to ensure every child grows up in a safe and nurturing family environment. In line with this, the government has launched a dedicated fostering programme aimed at placing children in family settings rather than long‑term institutional care.
