The Ministry of Education has announced that special priority will be given to ethics and moral upbringing within the secondary education system starting from the next academic year.
Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu said the initiative reflects a broader understanding of education that extends beyond academic achievement and requires the involvement of society as a whole. He noted that effective moral education depends on cooperation between schools, parents and the wider community.
The initiative aims to ensure that students develop good manners, positive personal characteristics and strong moral values alongside their formal studies. The programme is being implemented under the special guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The minister also highlighted the wider national context, stating that the Maldivian economy is largely driven by tourism, making it important for citizens to demonstrate good customs and strong moral conduct in their interactions with visitors.
As part of efforts to create a more focused learning environment, the government has also introduced stricter regulations on mobile phone use in schools. From next year, students below Grade 10 will not be allowed to bring mobile phones to school. A-Level students will be permitted to bring their devices, but they will be required to store them in designated lockers during school hours.
The Ministry of Education has confirmed that preparations are under way to implement these policies, which are intended to help nurture a generation of well-rounded and ethically responsible citizens.
