A Maldivian court has sentenced Hassan Mamdhooh, also known as Mandey, to 397 years in prison after finding him guilty of multiple offences linked to a property fraud scheme involving K-Park apartments in Hulhumalé.

Mamdhooh, a shareholder of K-Park Development Company, was charged with 50 counts of tax evasion, 50 counts of fraud, three counts of forgery and one count of money laundering. The court found him guilty on 94 counts.

According to the sentencing, Mamdhooh received eight years’ imprisonment on each of 46 counts of fraud, totalling 368 years, 14 years for 44 additional counts of fraud, 15 years for money laundering, and one and a half years for three counts of forgery, bringing the total sentence to more than 390 years in jail.

The ruling marks the longest prison term ever handed down by a Maldivian court. The previous record was held by Hussain Shifau, who was sentenced to 109 years in prison earlier this month after being convicted of fraudulently obtaining property through fake tickets.

Another defendant in the same case, Jaishan Saeed, was sentenced to more than 150 years in prison after being convicted on 86 of the 95 charges against him. He received 139 years for 44 counts of tax embezzlement, 13 years for 40 counts of fraud, and five years for aiding and abetting money laundering. The court also imposed a fine of MVR 300,000.

In addition to the prison sentences, the judge ordered both defendants to refund money to victims who had withdrawn funds, within six months.

The defendants requested that their sentences be converted to fines and house arrest. However, presiding judge Nadheem rejected the request, stating that the sentence could not be changed to house arrest and that the initial portion must be served in prison. He said there were aggravating circumstances that warranted harsher punishment and that the case should serve as a deterrent to others.

Earlier, the Criminal Court ordered the seizure of an apartment and a parking space at FW Residence after finding Mamdhooh guilty of money laundering.
