Mayor of Malé City Adam Azim has stated that the city council now treats mosque maintenance as a daily responsibility and will not allow religious matters to become secondary in its work.

Azim said mosque cleaning, which was previously carried out once a month or mainly during Ramadan, has now been transformed into a scheduled daily process. He noted that the council has made religious services a principal priority and intends to continue maintaining that focus.

The mayor also highlighted the rapid completion and reopening of the Malé Cemetery Mosque, describing the site as one that holds strong public significance. He added that long-standing issues, including flooding inside mosques during heavy rainfall, have now been resolved.

Azim said there is still considerable work ahead and noted that mosque-related concerns have been addressed on a daily basis over the past two years. He described the effort as a continuous process that requires ongoing attention to maintain order and proper standards.

According to the council, work is continuing to improve the quality of mosques and create a more comfortable environment for worshippers. All mosques under the council’s care are now regularly monitored, with repairs and cleaning carried out when required.

The council also reported that more than 500 mosques across Malé, Hulhumalé and Vilimalé were repaired last year as part of an expanded maintenance programme.
