PGO Files Multiple Sexual Offence Charges Against Sunny Umar, Seeks 44-Year Sentence

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has filed multiple charges against Hussain Sunny Umar of G. Maavashi under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, alleging repeated sexual abuse of a child over several years.

In a statement issued yesterday, the office confirmed that charges were submitted to the court yesterday itself, including three counts of touching a child with sexual intent under Section 3 of the Act.

The PGO has raised the following 5 charges against Sunny Umar: 

  • Alleged to have committed acts of sexual abuse against a child on various occasions before the child reached the age of seven, and continuing until August 2025 
  • The second and third charges involved the sexual abuse of a child between the ages of 9 and 10, and between the ages of 10 and 11. 
  • Obstruction of justice under Section 530 for allegedly providing false information during a police investigation.
  • Giving false information to a government authority during an investigation conducted by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Each of the three charges involving sexual abuse carries a sentence of between 10 and 14 years’ imprisonment.

For the two additional charges, the offences carry penalties of one year, seven months and six days, and four months and 24 days of imprisonment, respectively.

The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that it has requested the court to impose a cumulative sentence of 44 years in prison if the charges are proven.

Authorities confirmed that Hussain Sunny Umar has been held in remand since 2 January. 

Umar was initially summoned to the Family and Child Protection Department for questioning upon his return to the country on 1 December 2025 and was released. He was later re-arrested at Velana International Airport while attempting to leave the country.
