Construction of 75 new housing units has officially commenced in Dhiggaru, marking a significant step towards addressing the island’s housing shortage.

The project was awarded in 2024 to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC), which is developing modern homes of approximately 1,000 square feet. Each unit is designed to include three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, dining area, laundry space and a storeroom.

Excavation work is currently underway to lay the foundation, signalling the start of a major infrastructure development for the island’s population of around 1,300 residents.

The housing initiative follows decades of land erosion that significantly limited space for development on the island, which spans around 10 hectares. A large-scale shore protection project was previously carried out to address the issue, involving the dredging of 25 hectares of new land. The reclaimed area has been reinforced with coastal protection structures, including a 700-metre seawall, a 138-metre outer seawall and a 332-metre geo-bag revetment.

In September 2025, Mohamed Muizzu announced an expansion of the housing project alongside a broader development plan for Dhiggaru.

The wider initiative includes plans for a new 30-bed hospital to improve healthcare services, redevelopment of the island’s harbour, construction of a nine-classroom school building with a multi-purpose hall, and enhanced facilities for local fishermen, who play a central role in the island’s economy.
