The Maldivian government has arranged for an additional international hospital to provide services under the Aasandha national health insurance scheme.

Aasandha coverage is now available at Kings Hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka, which began treating patients under the programme last month. The expansion comes after Lanka Hospitals, a popular choice among Maldivians, temporarily suspended its Aasandha services due to a contract dispute.

Authorities stated that adding Kings Hospital helps address concerns of Maldivians living in or visiting Sri Lanka who rely on Aasandha for medical treatment.

Under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the government has been working to strengthen Aasandha services and ease challenges faced by patients seeking care abroad. Agreements have now been signed with 63 hospitals internationally, including nine in Sri Lanka, to provide treatment under the national health insurance scheme.
