President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday rejected allegations that recent job announcements in local islands were aimed at securing public support ahead of elections, insisting that neither he nor his administration engages in such practices.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Muizzu instead accused the previous administration of politicising recruitment, citing state utility company Fenaka as an example.
President Muizzu responded to allegations that increased job announcements in local islands were aimed at securing public support ahead of elections. He said neither he nor his administration engages in such practices, but claimed the previous administration had done so, citing Fenaka as an example.
He added that upon assuming office, he had pledged not to dismiss individuals employed under the previous administration, even if those jobs had been created with electoral motives.
“I am not a person who does things due to an election. Have I gone to any island in connection with an election?” he asked.
The President said his engagements with the public and the rollout of development projects were not linked to elections, stressing that his administration remains focused on delivering its commitments. He noted that he had visited all islands across the Maldives, including multiple visits to more than 50 islands.
“I never met the citizens in connection with the election. When I met the [citizens of] Male’ wards, there was no election,” he said.
In November 2025, the President began a series of meetings with residents of Malé, meeting each ward separately to discuss concerns and ongoing issues. The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) announced on 4 December 2025 that the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections would be held on 4 April 2026.
However, President Muizzu has also taken part in campaign activities for candidates of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). Yesterday, he attended a door-to-door campaign event for West Henveiru candidate Moosa Jaleel in the Malé City Council elections.
