Maldives police refute reports of election related pay hike

The Maldives Police Service has denied claims circulating on social media suggesting that officers received a salary increase in connection with the upcoming local council elections.

Assistant Commissioner of Police and spokesperson Ahmed Shifan clarified that the adjustment is unrelated to elections and is instead part of a pre‑approved change under the state pay framework.

The allowance adjustment comes two years after police officers shifted to the state pay framework on 1 January, under which post allowances automatically move to the second tier after completing two years. The allowance applies only to officers who have remained in the same rank and grade for two years and have achieved above 75 percent in performance evaluations for two consecutive years.

Police salaries were last revised in March 2024 when the new pay structure took effect, marking a 35 percent increase and the first salary adjustment of its kind since 2009 that included changes to the basic salary.

The Ministry of Finance reported that staff expenditure rose by 7.5 percent last year due to the harmonisation of police and military pay under the new framework.
