India has approved a record volume of essential commodities for export to the Maldives for the 2026–27 period, according to an announcement by the Indian High Commission.

The Indian government has authorised the export of key food items and construction materials, including eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, lentils, stone aggregate and river sand. The approvals were granted under a long-standing bilateral mechanism through which the Maldives submits its annual requirements.

The High Commission stated that the quantities approved for the 2026–27 period represent the highest allocation since the arrangement was established in 1981.

The rice quota has been increased by 77 per cent compared to the previous year, reflecting a significant rise in supply. River sand and stone aggregate continue to be identified as critical materials supporting the Maldives’ construction sector.

India has also confirmed that these exports will remain exempt from any existing or future restrictions throughout the financial year, maintaining continuity in supply.

The development reaffirms India’s ongoing support for the Maldives under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, with the country continuing to play a key role in providing essential commodities and broader assistance across multiple sectors.
