A section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé will be closed from today as part of ongoing efforts to modernise one of the capital’s busiest roads.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company has announced that both the road and adjacent harbour area from Fishermen’s Park to Bank of Maldives will be closed to facilitate sheet piling works. The works will be carried out across segments two to four of Phase One of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project, with the closure set to remain in effect until 4 July.

Authorities have requested that all boats and speedboats currently docked in the affected area be removed to allow construction to proceed. The company has also issued an apology for any inconvenience caused by the closure.

The affected harbour serves as a key docking point for speedboat ferries travelling to various islands, making the closure significant for daily transport operations.

The Boduthakurufaanu Magu project aims to widen and asphalt the road from near the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the Presidential Jetty. Construction initially began near the Henveiru Terminal, leading to the temporary relocation of atoll ferry services to the Maafannu Ferry Terminal, also known as the Villingili Ferry Terminal, and the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal.

The Malé City Council had previously outlined that the project would be carried out in phases, beginning with the section from the Henveiru Terminal to Fishermen’s Park, which remains closed pending completion of works. Subsequent construction will extend from Fishermen’s Park to Jetty Number 5, a segment earlier scheduled for closure from 30 March until completion.

According to the council’s plan, work on the next segment, from Jetty Number 5 to the Izzudheen Jetty, is expected to commence around 17 April as the broader redevelopment progresses.
