Tourist arrivals to the Maldives declined by 26 per cent in the first week of April compared to the same period last year, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism.
A total of 36,333 tourists were recorded between 1 and 7 April, down from 49,074 arrivals during the same period in the previous year.
Cumulative arrivals from the beginning of the year to 7 April reached 684,908, slightly below the 689,634 arrivals recorded during the same timeframe last year, reflecting a decrease of 4,726 tourists. The daily average of arrivals stood at 7,061 visitors.
Resorts continued to account for the majority of tourist stays, hosting 462,361 visitors. Guesthouses accommodated 173,434 tourists, while hotels recorded 18,865 stays. Tourist vessels hosted 14,568 visitors, with a further 873 staying in other types of facilities.
China remained the leading source market with 100,185 arrivals, followed by Russia with 84,739 and the United Kingdom with 65,105. Italy, Germany, India, France, the United States, Switzerland and Austria completed the top ten source markets.
The Ministry indicated that arrivals from the Middle East have declined amid the ongoing conflict in the region, contributing to the overall drop in figures.
