The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has opened applications for those wishing to become observers and monitors in the additional round of elections for the local councils and Women’s Development Committees (WDC) scheduled for next Saturday.
The Commission said applicants must submit forms via its main portal before 15:00 on Thursday, 16 April 2026. Individuals who were issued passes to serve as observers or monitors during the first round are not required to reapply for the additional round.
The ECM said polling stations will be established in the islands and cities within the relevant constituencies, as well as in Malé City.
The additional vote will be held for two local council seats and three WDC seats after candidates received an equal number of votes in several constituencies in the nationwide elections held on April 4, requiring a second round under the Local Council Elections Act and the 2026 election regulations.
The council seats include the women’s reserved seat in Baa Atoll Dhonfanu Council and the Fuvahmulah City Dhadimagu constituency seat, which is also reserved for women. The second round of the WDC elections will select the president of the Haa Atoll Kelaa Committee, as well as members for the Haa Dhaalu Atoll Neykurendhoo Committee and the Laamu Atoll Maavah Committee.
Voting in the additional round will take place on Saturday, 18 April, from 08:00 to 16:00. The ECM said official results are scheduled to be announced on Sunday, 19 April.
