Rain Forecast Across Maldives as Weather Patterns Shift

MV+ News Desk | April 16, 2026

The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast widespread rainfall across much of the Maldives today, with scattered showers expected to persist in the following days.

The Met Office stated that although this period typically represents the warmest time of the year in the country, the current rainfall is being driven by a developing cloud mass over the region.

Despite the unsettled weather, perceived temperatures are expected to remain high.

Forecasts indicate that northern and central atolls will experience rain and thunderstorms, with heavy downpours anticipated on some islands, while parts of the southern atolls are also expected to see scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Wind conditions in the northern atolls are expected to be predominantly from the west and northwest at speeds of three to 10 miles per hour.

In the central and southern atolls, winds are forecast from the southwest and west at speeds of seven to 15 miles per hour, with gusts potentially reaching up to 30 miles per hour during periods of rainfall.

Sea conditions are expected to be slight to moderate, becoming rough during squalls, with wave heights ranging between two and five feet in central and southern regions.

The Met Office has also cautioned that with the anticipated onset of the southwest monsoon early next month, rainfall from mid-month onward may be accompanied by frequent lightning and thunderstorm
