The Adhaalath Party has demanded strict legal and regulatory action against a local tourist resort and the individuals involved after footage appearing to show a same-sex ceremony surfaced online, triggering an official police investigation.

The conservative political party condemned the event as a direct violation of the Maldives’ legal and religious framework, arguing that tourism properties remain subject to national jurisdiction and cannot permit activities that breach Islamic law.

Stills and video clips circulating on social media show two men holding hands in wedding attire on a resort beachfront in what appeared to be a symbolic ceremony. Under the Maldivian Penal Code and Islamic Sharia, same-sex unions and relations are prohibited.

“Given that tourist resorts fall within the sovereign jurisdiction of the Maldives, no party must be permitted to run any activities that violate the sanctity of Islam, breach Maldivian legislation, or pave the way for major crimes and offences,” the Adhaalath Party said in a formal statement, urging authorities to impose the maximum penalties permitted by law.

The Maldives Police Service confirmed that an investigation into the matter is underway, classifying the event as an unlawful act. In an advisory issued alongside the inquiry, police urged the hospitality sector, including both local and expatriate staff to ensure resort premises adhere strictly to domestic laws and social and religious norms.

Authorities have not named the resort or the individuals involved, and inquiries remain ongoing.
