Saudi Arabia’s low-cost carrier Flynas is preparing to commence flights to the Maldives next month, according to Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Ameen.
The minister stated that several airlines operating to the Maldives had temporarily suspended services due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. In response, the government has been working to attract additional carriers from other markets to maintain connectivity.
He noted that 18 to 19 flights had been cancelled as a result of the situation, but services by Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways have now resumed. Flights operated by flydubai and Air Arabia have also restarted.
The minister said the impact of the Middle East conflict is being felt globally, but added that the Maldives is continuing to record growth in both tourist arrivals and the number of airlines serving the destination.
He further stated that Aeroflot and Turkish Airlines have increased their flight frequencies, while airlines such as Beondand Flynas have decided to begin operations to the Maldives.
Flynas is scheduled to launch flights from Riyadh to the Maldives on 3 May, while Beond’s charter programme is expected to commence in August.
At present, the majority of airlines operating to the Maldives are from the Asian region, with 16 Asian carriers serving the country, followed by 13 European airlines and six from the Middle East.
