Islamic Ministry to Draft Legislation to Address Hajj and Umrah Scams
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced plans to draft new legislation aimed at addressing scams linked to Hajj and Umrah travel arrangements.
Speaking in Parliament today, the Islamic Minister revealed these plans in response to concerns raised by Manadhoo’s MP Husnee Mubarik regarding fraudulent practices by some travel groups that fail to meet their obligations to pilgrims.
The Minister stated that a legal framework is needed to ensure a fair and effective solution to the issue. He noted that the proposed legislation is currently being prepared and will outline the responsibilities of the Maldives Hajj Corporation, as well as private companies organising Hajj and Umrah trips.
“This is related to money. This is a top issue for citizens, as well as their rights. There should be a law relating to this. This problem can be stopped through strong legal measures,” the Minister said.
He added that the draft legislation is expected to be completed soon and called on Members of Parliament to support and pass the bill once it is presented.
